Falling in love with Lisbon (Part 2)

Read Part 1 Here

————

Beside the charming single carriage tram, the rich and sweet egg custard tarts, Lisbon attracts tourists with its architecture style that is a mixture between Gothic, Baroque, and Neoclassicism. Taking a walk around Lisbon is to weave your way into narrow alleys that barely fit two people holding hands, to gaze at colourful houses cascading on the hills, and to admire churches and stations with entrance that is finely carved.

Most of all, don’t forget to look down, because Lisbon is full of streets and pavements with artistic mosaic patterns.

Lisboa, A Cidade das Sete Colinas – Lisbon, the city of seven hills

February 2016

Stepping out of the plane, I could not hold myself back from exclaiming “Oh this is perfect!” when I felt the cool breeze passing. Seriously though, comparing to the gray gloomy weather in Paris, Lisbon’s weather was heavenly. The afternoon sunlight was the colour of honey, the sky was as clear and as blue as it could be, the kind of weather that was not too cold nor too hot, just perfect for my family’s plans of visiting the city. This beautiful start of the trip made me that much more excited for my last trip of 2016.

The new year’s cake

Matthias’s family invited me for New Year’s eve dinner, and I got to make a cake for dessert. The guests this time were Matthias’s god mother, and a close friend of his mom, so I decided to make a simple vanilla butter cake with frosting. I topped and decorated the cake with fresh strawberries, almond dipped in chocolate and handmade chocolate leaves, as well as the “Happy New Year” text also in chocolate.

Wooden Drawer (5) – The end of a road

the-end-of-one-journey-is-the-beginning-of-another

I haven’t updated this blog for more than 3 weeks, which I think it’s the longest that I’ve not posted ever since I created this blog. Of course my love for the kitchen is still very much there, it’s just that for the past 3 weeks I was focusing on finishing and defending my thesis, so I had a hiatus on updating Miamivores.

The last 3 weeks where I just focused on writing and practicing for the defence, I was on an emotional roller-coaster. 3 years I’ve gotten used to almost banging my head against the wall every time I have to look for an article, to drinking coffee for those late nights writing, and to sometimes feel like giving up. There are times that I prayed to every god possible to be done with the thesis so that I don’t have to deal with all those headaches anymore. However, when I finally got the green light from my supervisor for the defence, beside the happiness I suddenly felt a bit…loss.

A day in Lyon

This Lyon trip happened pretty much out of the blue. It was a fine Friday morning, I was being lazy on my bed and whining to Matthias about how I didn’t get to travel for a really long time. He turned to me and said “There’s a train to Lyon in 1 hour, the price’s cheap, wanna go?”. So allez hop, we changed our clothes and left for the trip.

Vieux Lyon (8)

Lyon is a city in the Rhône-Alpes region, towards the middle east of France, and it’s only about 1 hour and a half by train from Grenoble, so we’ve decided to make it a day trip. Lyon is one of the most beautiful tourism cities of France, and is a city with a long historical culture. I’ve been to Lyon in 2004, visiting my brother who was studying there, however I didn’t know much French at that time, and my brother was busy with school works so we didn’t get to visit a lot of places. This time we took advantage of the 1 hour train ride to consult some online tourism sites and chose some must-see spots, for the rest, we agreed to let…fate lead the way laughing

Weekend picnic

IMG_5695

It was really sunny last weekend, so I persuaded Matthias to go on a picnic with me (Matthias easily gets sunburns and doesn’t like sitting crossed legs on the ground, so he was mostly giving in to my constant request tongue). We woke up early and went to the supermarket for some veggies and bread, went back home to prepare some dishes and then took the tramway to the nearby park and…started picnic-ing laughing

Wooden Drawer (4) – Gift boxes for Lunar New Year

I have one Vietnamese blogger that I really admire because of her simple yet full of love writing style about her life in Japan, and about her family members. One of her post series that I always love to read is about her gift boxes of homemade sweets and treats to her friends and acquaintances for special occasions. I have wanted to ‘copy’ this lovely idea for a while now, but it’s not until this year that I muster enough self-motivation to really do it.

7 gift boxes, although not yet perfect, make me feel really happy. The process of preparing these gift boxes is full of different emotions: nervous since it is the first time I’ve made some of these sweets, agitation when waiting for the batter to bake in the oven, and happiness when the cakes come out smelling heavenly. There were so many times I thought I had to abandon this project, but finally it came to the time where I sat and divide the treats into small bags, arrange them into the boxes, and once everything was done, all y nervousness and fatigue vanished, replaced by a surge of happiness. Hopefully I’ve managed to bring a bit of sweetness at the start of the year to the receivers of my gift.

Wooden Drawer (3) – Snowing

This morning when I woke up and looked out the window, everything was white: it was snowing!

I’ve been in France for a few years now, and I see snow almost every year, but surprisingly I still feel a small happiness every time. My camera was immediately put into action.

The day before new year

Bài viết tiếng Việt: Trước thềm năm mới

Miamivores has officially gone into operation for 8 months (almost 1 year old tongue), with 41 blog posts, 23 followers total on both the Vietnamese and English blog, and 126 likes on the facebook page. Although these numbers are still very small and modest compared to a lot of talented bloggers out there, they are big enough for me Matthias to feel like we are authors of a book that receives love and motivation from all of you. It’s a very small, simple yet extremely happy feeling.  On the day before new year, we would like to send you a simple and sincere thank you.

BeFunky Collage

We hope that you will always feel more in love with cooking, and sometimes when you visit Miamivores, doesn’t matter how you think about us, if you feel a bit more interesting in cooking, or you find some inspiration to cook a dish, then we have succeeded!

In the last year, there were some unexpected things happened, so Miamivores is still not yet completed. In 2016, we promise to take care more of the blog, most specifically update our still empty index blush and the ‘girlfriend’ will continuously motivate the ‘boyfriend’  to post something on the blog. I also have some new plan for Miamivores in the new year, and I hope it will go smoothly.

A batch of cat’s tongue cookies (langue de chat) at the end of the year, for the New Year’s eve dinner with Matthias’s family. Although they don’t look so beautiful, they are sweet enough to end a very fufilling year of 2015.

langue de chat

We hope you will have a wonderful new year with lots of happiness, lots of luck, and that your kitchen will always be warm and filled with deliciously smelled food.

Bordeaux (Part 2): The city’s park – Perfect lunch

Part 1: Mirror square – White chocolate tiramisu – Pasushi & Patapas

According to the plan, our next morning was supposed to be spent in the Botanic garden, but unfortunately the garden was closed out of schedule, so we did a small tour outside and took the tramway back to the city’s main park.
